What is model progression?

The basic idea behind model progression is that presenting the learner with the full complexity of the simulation at once may be too overwhelming. By subsequently moving towards the full model that should be learned, knowledge of learners gradually increases and also the control over the simulations may stay within acceptable limits. In SimQuest model progression is introduced by making a new simulation context. Model progression may also involve moving from qualitative to quantitative models. This is assumed to lead to a more smooth learning process.

Another form of model progression is introducing muliple views (perspectives) on essentially the same model. In this way learners can look at the same model in different ways. This should foster a flexible knowledge base.

Finally, model progression can be used to increase the level of control for the learners, starting with system control and moving towards learner control.
