Jerome Bruner on discovery learning

Bruner [1] made a distinction between what he calls an expository mode of teaching and a hypothetical mode of teaching. In the hypothetical mode there is a much more cooperative relation between the teacher and the learner: The student is not a bench-bound listener, but is taking a part in the formulation and at times may play the principal role in it'[1].

Bruner saw the benefits of discovery learning in four areas.

The paper by Bruner has been an influential one. Much, however, what Bruner has to say, is in the form of assumptions and hypotheses, that in Bruner's paper only find indirect evidence.
